You could easily spend weeks down here exploring gorgeous national parks, hiking, surfing or spotting kangaroos on the beach (yes, kangaroos! On the beach!) but if your time is a little more limited, these are the absolute things to do in Esperance.
Cape Le Grand National Park
The star of the show, without question. Cape Le Grand is 30 minutes down the road from Esperance is full to the brim with natural highs. Known for its rugged scenery, huge cliffs, idyllic beaches and wildlife it’s well worth a night or two under the cover of a swag. One of the biggest attractions is the chance to spot kangaroos sunning themselves on the beach at popular Lucky Bay, about as Australian a scene as you’re likely to see. Get active on excellent bushwalking trails through heathlands full of wildflowers, go fishing or hiking, or try your hand at rock climbing at the famous Frenchman Peak. If all this sounds a bit too energetic then just find yourself a sunny spot on one of the many idyllic beaches, kick back with a picnic and marvel at this little slice of Aussie heaven.
The Great Ocean Drive
A fun and easy 40km circular loop brings you up-close to the area’s stunning coastal scenery. Wind your way to beautiful beaches where you can stop for a swim or a surf, or even windsurf. There are numerous stops along the route, with some great photo ops including Rotary Lookout, Observatory Point and the unusual and Instagram-worthy Pink Lake. Walking trails from these stops are easy and worth the effort with the Salmon Beach trail from Rotary Lookout being one of the best.
Twilight Beach is one of the best beaches in Australia. Less crowded than Lucky Bay but with all the idyllic beach boxes ticked, and with gentle surf, this is a great spot to practice your budding surfer skills without too much embarrassment. Swimming is easier and safer here than other beaches in the area too. It’s located close to town so you can easily wander down with your board for a relaxing afternoon in the sun.
